Yoga for Back Pain

This class will provide information and active participation from a chair on how yoga can be used to manage low back pain. Several recent research articles support the performance of yoga in order to decrease low back pain and increase function. Yoga consists of breathing, meditation and physical exercises known as asanas. Introductory movements will be demonstrated and explored to gain a basic understanding of the benefits and determine if yoga may be right for you.

As a physical therapist first, Stephanie Kelley blends her knowledge of human movement and disease with yoga to provide classes for healing of injury and for chronic disease management. She graduated from The Ohio State University as a physical therapist in 1990. In the 10 years following, she earned an MS in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and a PhD in Education.

Throughout her career she has been a clinician, an educator, and a researcher. Through this she has built a health and wellness practice specializing in the treatment of people with musculoskeletal conditions with a particular interest in spinal disorders. Her years as a physical therapist influence her yoga practice to be focused on alignment, muscle activation consistent with functional movement patterns, and modifying poses to meet the needs of each person.
